John Matteson, who does double duty as an AZ Trail Association Trail Steward and as an active member and a Past President of Friends of the Tonto, was interviewed by Mare Czinar about his recent work on the Sheep Creek Trail in the Mazatzal Wilderness on the Tonto National Forest’s Cave Creek Ranger District. Work was done with a paid American Conservation Experience youth crew and also volunteers, under a State Parks Recreation Trails Program grant. Work involved not only backpacking in to this remote site, but using cross-cut hand saws (no motorized equipment allowed, due to Wilderness regulations) to cut huge trees that had fallen across and blocked the trail.
